Harvest Haven Farm is a non-profit venture dedicated to sustainable agriculture, community engagement, and food security. Operating under the guiding principles of GreenGrowth Guardians Co., this farm is more than just a place to grow crops—it's a living testament to our commitment to environmental stewardship and giving back to the community.
Where our commitment to sustainable land management is not just a mission but a way of life. By practicing what we preach, we aim to inspire others and set an example of responsible stewardship. Beyond our operational goals, the farm is a welcoming space for our community and travelers alike.
Every harvest—whether vegetables, fruits, or other produce—is dedicated to supporting our local food pantry. Named in honor of my grandmother Peggy, who taught me the values of faith and service, Peggy's Pantry stands as a testament to her legacy of glorifying God through helping those in need. Together, we strive to make a positive impact, nourishing both the land and the lives of others.
As travelers pass by on the highway, they are captivated by the sight of Harvest Haven Farm—a picturesque landscape enclosed by a pristine white fence. The grand entrance beckons with a wide gate proudly displaying the farm's name. "Visionary Way" will be the main road on the farm, symbolizing our unwavering commitment to the vision and journey that brought us here. It's a powerful name that encapsulates the spirit of perseverance and determination.
To the left and right of the entrance, 'Dana's Roses and Flowers' stretches elegantly along the front and back sides of the fence, a vibrant tapestry of colors and scents dedicated to honoring my mother, Dana. This expansive garden features a profusion of roses in varying hues, their petals delicately unfurling amidst a backdrop of big, colorful blooms that paint the landscape with joyous splendor. Dana's Roses and Flowers not only celebrates her love for gardening but also symbolizes her enduring presence and the beauty she cultivated in our lives.
To the left of the entrance road lies 'Honey's Orchard,' named in loving tribute to my sweet great-grandmother, who cherished her small farm that once flourished with similar fruit trees. This orchard not only honors her memory but also embodies the spirit of giving back and preserving traditions. As visitors stroll among the rows of apple and peach trees, they can sense the legacy of care and dedication that 'Honey' instilled, fostering a deep connection to both the land and its storied past. The pollinator habitats interspersed between the trees further enrich the ecosystem, ensuring that this thriving orchard continues to flourish for generations to come.
To the right of the entrance road lies 'BooBoo's Fields,' affectionately named after my beloved grandmother, who nurtured me and instilled a deep appreciation for homegrown goodness. Known fondly as BooBoo, she cherished the simple pleasures of a garden, cultivating vibrant tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, and a bounty of other fresh delights. This garden not only honors her legacy of wholesome living but also reflects her unwavering love for sharing nutritious meals straight from the earth. As visitors wander through BooBoo's Fields, they are reminded of her enduring passion for gardening and the joy she found in nurturing both plants and family bonds.
Adjacent to BooBoo's Fields, a tranquil water channel meanders gracefully, reflecting the sunlight and enhancing the natural beauty of the farm. Along its banks, weeping willows sway gently, their cascading branches dipping into the water, creating a peaceful retreat amidst the vibrant vegetable garden. This artful water feature not only adds to the farm's charm but also provides a refreshing oasis for both visitors and local wildlife, fostering a harmonious blend of aesthetics and ecological balance.
To the right of the entrance, the expansive pond named 'Stephanie' commands attention with its tranquil beauty and expansive size, a testament to the nurturing spirit of my best friend's mother. Stephanie's Pond mirrors the vastness of her kindness and the depth of her care, much like the serene waters that reflect the sky above. Here, the peaceful ambiance invites contemplation and appreciation for the natural world, echoing the warmth and grace she bestowed upon all who knew her.
A winding pebble walkway gracefully encircles the entire front portion of the property, inviting leisurely strolls and providing access for vehicles to traverse at a gentle pace. Smooth, multicolored pebbles, carefully laid out, create a charming path that complements the natural surroundings. Lush greenery and flowering plants border the walkway, adding bursts of color and fragrance. This expansive path not only enhances accessibility but also serves as a scenic route, allowing visitors to admire the orchards, vegetable gardens, and Stephanie's Pond with ease and comfort.
At the top of the road, prominently situated, is the operational barn—a vital hub designed to accommodate both business operations and practical needs. The barn features expansive door openings on both ends, allowing easy access for heavy machinery, trucks, and trailers. This setup ensures seamless coordination for loading and unloading equipment, facilitating efficient workflow and maintenance activities. One side of the barn is dedicated specifically to the maintenance department, equipped with tools, workstations, and storage facilities to support ongoing upkeep and repairs. This integrated design not only enhances operational efficiency but also underscores the farm's commitment to functional excellence and effective management of agricultural resources.
To the right side of the barn, a designated area is reserved for employee parking, ensuring convenient access for staff members. This section provides ample space for parking vehicles used by farm workers and maintenance personnel, facilitating efficient arrivals and departures. Located adjacent to the operational hub of the barn, this parking area enhances accessibility while maintaining organizational efficiency. It reflects the farm's commitment to providing practical amenities that support its workforce and operational needs.
To honor the memory of Rodney, a beloved friend and recreational league sports coach, the expansive fields located behind the barn to the left are named 'Rodney's Hokie Fields.' These versatile fields not only grow soy, wheat, and other essential crops for sustainable agriculture but also evoke memories of Hokie football and Lane Stadium, reflecting Rodney's enthusiasm for the Virginia Tech Hokies. As visitors walk through Rodney's Hokie Fields, they are reminded of his zest for life, dedication to sports, and his infectious spirit of camaraderie. This dedication ensures that Rodney's legacy of joy and community connection lives on in this cherished space.
Behind the barn, to the right, stands Barry's Forest—a thriving woodland dedicated to sustainable land management practices. Named in honor of my stepfather Barry, who imparted valuable knowledge on preserving and nurturing natural landscapes, this forest serves as a testament to his legacy. Managed with care and expertise, Barry's Forest exemplifies our commitment to maintaining healthy ecosystems, fostering biodiversity, and ensuring the longevity of our natural resources. This tranquil haven not only supports local wildlife but also provides a serene retreat where visitors can connect with nature and appreciate the beauty of sustainable forestry.
Tommy's Barn is a tribute to an incredible role model, my childhood friend’s father, Tommy. The barn, with its classic, old-fashioned design and sturdy gambler roof, reflects Tommy's strength, wisdom, and enduring presence in the lives of those he influenced. Inside, the barn is more than just a functional space for housing animals; it's a symbol of the values Tommy stood for—hard work, kindness, and mentorship. Spacious stalls and comfortable resting areas provide a welcoming environment for both cattle and horses, symbolizing the care and compassion Tommy showed to everyone around him. The barn's traditional sliding doors and rustic windows add a touch of nostalgia, creating a picturesque setting that embodies the simplicity and honesty that Tommy exemplified. Tommy's Barn is not just a building; it is a legacy of a man who inspired and guided others, offering shelter and support just as Tommy did for those who looked up to him. This barn stands as a reminder of the lasting impact one person can have on a community, serving as a beloved centerpiece of Harvest Haven Farm where Tommy’s spirit and values live on.
The farm extends a warm invitation to visitors with Martha's Trails, a network of scenic walking and biking paths that wind through Barry's Forest. Named in loving memory of Martha Johnson, a beloved high school teacher renowned for her nurturing spirit and dedication to student growth, these trails embody her legacy of care and encouragement. Alongside towering trees and tranquil streams, Martha's Trails offer a peaceful retreat where nature's beauty and the serenity of Barry's Forest converge. Separate parking, equipped with restrooms and nostalgic water fountains resembling old-school wells, ensures convenience and comfort for all who explore this cherished sanctuary. Martha's Trails stand as a testament to Martha's enduring impact and the farm's commitment to fostering community, wellness, and appreciation for the natural world.
Behind the barn, nestled within the farm's operations, stands a distinctive structure known as Vision's Vista. Rising like a grain storage silo, this cylindrical tower offers more than just storage—it provides a spiritual retreat and panoramic viewpoint. Ascend the staircase inside, where each step brings you closer to breathtaking views of Honey's Orchard, Dana's Roses and Flowers, Barry's Forest, Martha's Trails, and Rodney's Hokie Fields.
Named to reflect our collective vision and faith, Vision's Vista invites visitors to reflect on God's vision for this land and marvel at its natural beauty. It's a place to pause, find inspiration, and connect with the farm's purpose as a sanctuary of grace and tranquility.
As I embark on this journey to create a farm that reflects my vision and values, I am deeply grateful to God for guiding me and providing the inspiration. Every aspect of this farm, from Honey's Orchard to Dana's Roses and Flowers, from Barry's Forest to Martha's Trails, and Rodney's Hokie Fields, is a testament to His blessings and grace. The beauty of nature that surrounds us, the bounty of the land, and the opportunity to steward these gifts are all manifestations of His divine love.
In every tree planted, every crop grown, and every pathway laid, I seek to honor God's creation and His wisdom. This farm is not just a place of productivity and sustainability but also a sanctuary where His presence is felt in every breeze, every flower, and every moment of peace. It is my prayer that this farm will be a place of inspiration, where visitors can connect with nature, find solace in its beauty, and experience the wonder of God's creation.
As I name each area after loved ones and mentors who have shaped my journey, I do so with gratitude for their influence, knowing that God works through people to bless and guide us. May this farm be a beacon of His love and grace, a place where His presence is felt, and His blessings are shared with all who walk its paths.
